Pin-Up Anatomy – Recreating the iconic pin-ups with hundreds of items (14 pics)

With his  Pin-Up Specimen series, the American artist  Michael Mapes , based in New York, likes to pay tribute to the famous and iconic pin-ups from the 1950s, creating mosaics composed of hundreds of objects. These amazing fragmented portraits mix pieces of photographs and objects from the world of beauty and makeup, like false eyelashes, acrylic nails or pills, but also objects from biology and natural history, like glass bottles, dried flowers, insect pins or specimen boxes. After deconstructing these images, Michael Mapes assembles his pin-ups from this DNA, creating a surprising encounter between pop culture, collective imagination and the objective methodology of science.
